KATE MIDDLETON and Prince William are said to love the secluded privacy for their family on the glamorous island of Mustique – but the idyllic Caribbean island was the setting for the scandal that finally ended Princess Margaret’s marriage in the Seventies.

Kate, Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Williama re set to take their three children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis on their summer holidays to the exclusive Caribbean island of Mustique. The Duke and Duchess have often visited the private island, and were even reported to have spent a “babymoon” before the arrival of Prince George there. However, the exotic island is inextricably linked in many people’s minds with the controversial figure of Princess Margaret, who built a villa there in 1971.

The Queen’s sister was known for her love of glamorous partying and invited many of her celebrity friends to Mustique – but it also proved to be the scene of the final sandal that ended her marriage.

Princess Margaret and Antony Armstrong-Jones married in their royal wedding – the first ever to be televised – in 1960.

The engagement itself was something of a scandal as the public did not expect the princess to marry the photographer, who had been employed by the Royal Family before.

Their marriage turned out to be a tumultuous one, and both partners reportedly had a string of affairs.

However, when the princess was pictured in Mustique with a man much younger than herself, it provoked a crisis.

Channel 5 documentary “The Royal Family: Affairs and Infidelities”, which first aired earlier this year, delves into the circumstances surrounding the landmark royal divorce.

The documentary recalls how photographs of 44-year-old Princess Margaret and 27-year-old Roddy Llewellyn together on the island of Mustique “sent the press into a frenzy” when they surfaced in 1976.

The photographs, which seem fairly innocent by today’s standards, show the pair in swimming gear in the turquoise Caribbean waters.

Royal biographer Anne Sebba explained: “He was highly unsuitable, so these photographs were fairly dramatic really.

“Princess Margaret was after all the Queen’s sister, so what did this say about the Royal Family and their stability?”

The narrator continues: “The divorce could be considered a landmark moment in royal history.

“Princess Margaret would be the first major royal to get divorced in over 400 years.”

Princess Margaret died in 2002, however her glamorous life continues to fascinate, with documentary “Princess Margaret: The Rebel Royal” set to air on BBC2 this evening.

Margaret’s son, David, would sell her island villa, Les Jolies Eaux, after his mother’s death.

However, Mustique is still a favourite royal spot as Prince William and Kate have a long-standing love of the island.

Their love of island life even landed the Duchess of Cambridge in hot water with the Queen.

Katie Nicholl, in her 2010 biography “William and Harry”, relates how, in 2008, Kate had attracted criticism, and the attention of the Queen, for her exotic holidaying.

Ms Nicholl writes: “If she was not with William at Balmoral then the couple were skiing or holidaying on Mustique.

“Kate was there so often the press dubbed her ‘Queen of Mustique’, a title that had previously belonged to Princess Margaret.

“Britain was now in a recession an and such frivolous displays of wealth were unpalatable to the Queen.

“She is one of the hardest-working royals, despite her age, and that a future member of the family was without a full-time job was unacceptable to her.

“While the rest of the world speculated that an engagement was on the horizon for William and Kate, the Queen believed an announcement should be postponed until Kate was settled in a career.”

A source told the author: “It is Her Majesty’s opinion that if Kate is one day going to be William’s consort, then she needs a proper job.

“Swanning from one five-star holiday resort to another is not the prerequisite for a young woman possibly destined to be Queen.”
