A final year student at Niger Delta University, Wilberforce Island, Amassoma, reportedly lost his life following an altercation over a N150 levy.
The student, identified as Francis Palowei from the Department of Social Science Education, was allegedly murdered at a popular relaxation spot known as the sand dump in the area.
According to reports, local youths have been imposing fees on students who visit the spot to unwind and socialize, due to its popularity among students. On the evening of Monday, the victim and his friends arrived at the spot, where they were confronted by youths demanding N500 instead of the usual N150.
This disagreement escalated into an argument, prompting the community youths to summon other individuals, including alleged cult members, who fatally attacked the student.
A source close to the deceased described him as a promising young man, the son of a senior police officer, and a native of Obrigbene Town in Ekeremor Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
The tragic incident has plunged his family, friends, and the entire university community into mourning.
Confirming the incident, Mr. Ndoni Igezi, the Public Relations Officer of Niger Delta University, termed it unfortunate and assured that the police are actively managing the situation to prevent further unrest.
He explained that while the sand dump itself is not privately owned, local youths typically collect a N150 fee to allow access to its top for recreational purposes.
The Bayelsa State Police Command’s spokesperson, ASP Musa Muhammed, also confirmed the incident, noting that the Commissioner of Police has deployed additional security personnel to restore peace and order.
Police have initiated a manhunt to apprehend the perpetrators involved in the tragic killing.
