US President Donald Trump drew laughter from the assembled leaders when he threw the word ‘I am the boss’ at them as he arrived last for the final day of the Group of Seven (G7) summit in France today.
The ‘light remark came as the G7 threw its support behind the US President’s tentative agreement with Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and extend a fragile ceasefire.
The two sides are due to sign a draft memorandum of understanding in Switzerland on Friday, paving the way for 60 days of talks aimed at ending the conflict and placing limits on Tehran’s nuclear program.
Although the full details have not been officially released, Bloomberg News has reported that the proposed deal contains 14 points outlining the framework for the negotiations, including at least $300billion in financing for the rehabilitation of Iran.
In a declaration issued overnight, the leaders called the deal a ‘historic opportunity to prevent Iran from acquiring any nuclear weapons and tackling the threats related to its regional and ballistic activities’.
They added that they were ‘ready to contribute to its implementation’, even though neither the White House nor Iran has released the text of the agreement.
However, Trump said today that the ceasefire agreement reached this week with Iran was not final, and that he could resume a bombing campaign if Tehran did not comply.
‘It’s a memorandum of understanding. And if I don’t like it, we’ll go back to shooting at them, dropping bombs on their head,’ Trump said at the summit.
‘If I don’t like it, if they don’t behave, we’ll go right back to dropping bombs right smack in the middle of their head, OK?’
