President Donald Trump delivered a stern message to Hamas, demanding the immediate release of all hostages in Gaza and the return of the bodies of those killed, labeling their actions as indicative of a “sick” mentality.
His remarks came shortly after the White House confirmed that the U.S. was engaging in direct negotiations with the militant group.
“Release all of the hostages now, not later, and return the bodies of the individuals you murdered, or it will be OVER for you,” Trump stated in a post on Truth Social late Wednesday, March 5, following a meeting with eight freed hostages at the White House.
He emphasized his commitment to supporting Israel, stating, “I will send Israel everything it needs to finish the job,” and threatened that “not a single Hamas member will be safe if you don’t comply.”
This warning comes as the U.S. begins negotiations with Hamas regarding hostages and a potential ceasefire, a significant shift from its traditional stance of refraining from dialogue with groups classified as terrorist organizations.
Additionally, humanitarian aid and rights organizations are urging Israel to ensure unrestricted access to Gaza after halting aid to pressure Hamas into negotiating new terms for a ceasefire extension.
While the United States has designated Hamas as a Foreign Terrorist Organization since 1997, past administrations—including both Trump and Obama—have made exceptions, negotiating with groups like the Taliban post-9/11.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt was questioned on Wednesday about the rationale behind engaging directly with Hamas for the first time. She explained that the special envoy, appointed by Trump, had the authority to negotiate with any parties involved.
“Israel was consulted on this matter. Engaging in dialogue is part of the president’s effort to act in the best interest of the American people,” Leavitt stated.
The Israeli Prime Minister’s Office acknowledged that it had communicated its stance regarding direct talks with Hamas to the U.S.
In his Truth Social remarks, Trump also addressed the people of Gaza directly, stating, “A beautiful future awaits you, but not if you hold hostages. If you do, you are DEAD! Make a SMART decision. RELEASE THE HOSTAGES NOW, OR THERE WILL BE HELL TO PAY LATER!”
