Queen Sonja of Norway was taken to hospital on Monday after suffering from shortness of breath while staying at the royal cabin in Sikkilsdalen, central Norway.
The 87-year-old monarch was transported via air ambulance to Oslo University Hospital, Rikshospitalet, where she underwent medical evaluation. According to the Norwegian royal court, the examinations confirmed that her condition has since stabilised.
In an official statement, the Royal Household confirmed: “Her Majesty the Queen has been discharged from the National Hospital. The Queen was admitted due to shortness of breath. Investigations have shown that the situation has normalised. The Queen is on sick leave for the rest of the week.”
Queen Sonja had been scheduled to visit Sofienberg Church in Oslo on Thursday to observe the work of Spireverket, a group transforming the church into a cultural hub for children and young people.
The project’s general manager, Olav Sætersbakken, commented on the significance of the royal visit: “The fact that the Queen wants to see our work means a lot – both to us and to all the young people who put their effort and creativity into it.”
She was also expected to attend the opening of “AK Dolven. Amazon” at the National Museum, an event that will now proceed without her.
Queen Sonja is resting and recuperating, and updates on her health are expected later this week.
