A 17-month-old girl was hospitalized after falling from a second-floor bedroom window of a flat in Newport, Wales. Emergency services, including the Wales Air Ambulance, Welsh Ambulance Service, and Gwent Police, responded to the incident on Tuesday, May 20.

Gwent Police confirmed the toddler’s injuries are not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing. She remains in hospital receiving treatment.

The child’s mother later defended herself on social media, stating the little girl had been left alone for “less than five minutes” while she briefly stepped into the kitchen, according to WalesOnline.

Authorities said they received a call about a medical emergency at Welland Crescent around 12:45 p.m. A neighbour who witnessed the fall and lives on the ground floor is believed to have raised the alarm.

A police spokesperson said: “Officers attended along with paramedics from the Welsh Ambulance Service and Welsh Air Ambulance. A 17-month-old girl was taken to hospital for treatment. Her injuries are not thought to be life-threatening or life-changing.”

The incident comes just days after a separate tragedy in southeast London, where a two-year-old boy died after falling from a window. That incident, which occurred on Wynell Road in Forest Hill, is under investigation, though police say the boy’s death is being treated as “unexpected” and no arrests have been made.

Both cases have sparked renewed concern over child safety in multi-story residences.
