King Charles has postponed granting Prince William and Princess Kate the authority to issue royal warrants—a centuries-old tradition that allows members of the Royal Family to officially endorse businesses supplying goods or services to the household.
What Is a Royal Warrant?
Royal warrants are marks of prestige given to companies that have provided consistent service to the Royal Household. Around 800 businesses currently hold warrants, ranging from local artisans to global corporations.
Why the Delay?
The decision to appoint new warrant grantors lies solely with the King. Though it was widely anticipated that William and Kate would soon take on this role, Charles has yet to authorize the move. As a result, brands hoping for official recognition from the Prince and Princess of Wales must wait.
Some businesses that already work with the couple have inquired about when the application process will begin. However, under current rules, no applications can be submitted without the King’s formal approval.
The “Kate Effect”
Royal Editor Emily Nash notes, “A royal warrant from William and Kate would offer immense prestige and commercial value. We’ve already seen the ‘Kate effect’ in fashion—her influence can dramatically boost sales for designers and brands.”
Kate, 43, has become a powerful style influencer, with labels like Alexander McQueen, Self-Portrait, and Catherine Zoraida seeing significant demand after royal appearances. She’s expected to support British brands she already champions, including Holland Cooper, Sahar Millinery, and Aspinal of London.
William, 42, is likely to spotlight sustainable and eco-friendly businesses. In the past, he has backed companies such as Rapanui and Purified Shoes.
A Historic Opportunity
If granted the authority, Kate would be the first Princess of Wales to issue royal warrants since 1910. To qualify, businesses must have supplied the Royal Household for five of the past seven years and meet rigorous standards of quality, service, and sustainability.
No Timeline Yet
One reason for the delay may be the workload of the Lord Chamberlain’s Office, which is currently updating existing warrants issued by the late Queen Elizabeth II and the former Prince of Wales. Logistical challenges following last year’s coronation and the Queen’s funeral may also have contributed.
For now, the warrant process remains on hold for those associated with the Waleses, with no clear timeline until the King gives his official go-ahead.
