Grammy-winning singer John Legend has shared his thoughts on the dramatic transformation of his former collaborator, Kanye West, calling the rapper’s trajectory over the years both “sad” and “sometimes shocking.”
In a recent interview, Legend reflected on the early days of their creative partnership, particularly during the making of his 2004 debut album Get Lifted. The album, released under West’s GOOD Music label, was executive produced by West alongside Dave Tozer, will.i.am, and Devo Springsteen. It became a massive success, earning Legend three Grammy Awards and selling over three million copies.
“At the time, Kanye was passionate, gifted, and full of optimism,” Legend recalled. “He had big dreams—not just for himself, but for everyone around him.”
Legend contrasted that version of West with the controversial figure he’s become in recent years. “It’s sad—sometimes even shocking—to see where he is now,” he said.
In recent years, West has been the subject of intense public scrutiny for his inflammatory statements, erratic behavior, and controversial fashion choices, including wearing a black KKK hood and selling merchandise featuring Nazi symbols. His actions have led to widespread condemnation and bans from several social media platforms.
“I didn’t see a trace of this Kanye back then,” Legend said. “His obsession with antisemitism and anti-Black rhetoric—it’s deeply troubling. Watching his devolution has been heartbreaking.”
Legend also suggested that a turning point in West’s life may have been the sudden death of his mother, Donda West, in 2007. “I’m not a psychologist, but it’s clear that something changed after she passed. That moment seemed to mark the beginning of his decline—and it’s only escalated since,” he added.
