Iran’s military has insisted the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed to Tehran’s ‘enemies’ as it dismissed Donald Trump’s claims Tehran has asked for a ceasefire.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guards claimed the waterway is ‘firmly and dominantly’ under the control of its naval forces and that it would not be unblocked for its opponents.
‘The situation in the Strait of Hormuz is also firmly and dominantly under the control of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ naval forces,’ the Guards said in a statement carried on state television.
The statement comes after Trump announced Iran’s leadership is requesting a ceasefire – but warned that any truce is contingent on the Strait of Hormuz opening.
Trump said Iran has asked for a ceasefire but one would only come when the Strait of Hormuz is ‘open, free, and clear,’ in a post published on his Truth Social platform.
‘Until then, we are blasting Iran into oblivion or, as they say, back to the Stone Ages,’ he added.
The new ceasefire claims comes hours before Trump is scheduled to give a televised address at 9pm ET (1am UK time) about the ongoing war.
