U.S. President Donald Trump he will be heading to the White House Situation Room to decide imminently whether to extend the ceasefire between the US and Iran.
The proposed deal from Iran reportedly includes a 60-day ceasefire extension, reopening the Strait of Hormuz, and monitoring nuclear infrastructure.
As it is, the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz ‘will now be lifted’ as part of a deal with the regime, the US President is expected to make a ‘final decision’ on peace soon.
‘I will be meeting now, in the Situation Room, to make a final determination,’ he announced on Truth Social Friday, referring to the White House’s nerve centre for monitoring global crises.
Sources had said a deal was in the offing to extend the truce, which has been in place since early April, for another 60 days.
The deal would also allow oil and gas shipments to resume through the Strait of Hormuz while negotiators tackle tricky issues such as Iran’s nuclear programme.
It would need to include opening the Strait of Hormuz and dismantling Tehran’s capacity to make a nuclear weapon for the President to approve an agreement with the regime.
However, Tehran has strongly cast doubt on the negotiations, asserting that it will not engage while under U.S. threats and stating that its defensive missile capabilities are non-negotiable.
