U.S. President Donald Trump revealed that US officials Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner met with Iranian counterparts at the UN General Assembly in New York on Tuesday, indicating that the two discussed ending the nearly seven-month conflict.
‘It ended an hour ago,’ Trump said during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. ‘It was a meeting that lasted for three hours.’
He called it a ‘very good meeting’ and said that Iran can embrace ‘potential greatness or obliteration.’
‘It’s to their advantage to make a deal,’ Trump said, adding, ‘We have another one scheduled with them in the near future.’
It was unclear whether the president attended the meeting in person, but Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law Jared Kushner attended the session, Trump said.
Though it seems unlikely that Trump would have had the time to pop in between meetings with the Prime Ministers of Japan and the UK, in addition to a sit-down with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
No specific details or formal agreements have been disclosed by either side, though it is expected that the two sides discussed the ongoing war in Iran and how to end it.
