Former U.S. President Barack Obama and U.S. President Donald Trump have escalated a war of words on the campaign trail ahead of the upcoming U.S. midterm elections.
Speaking in Ohio the former Democratic president ridiculed Trump’s lavish White House renovations, compared his taste in gold to Saddam Hussein’s and accused him of enriching his family and political allies.
But Trump fired back from a packed campaign rally in Georgia, mocking Obama’s ability to attract supporters while declaring that his controversial tariffs were delivering billions in investment and thousands of American jobs.
The extraordinary presidential showdown unfolded across three battleground states, with Obama campaigning in Ohio and Michigan while Trump attempted to rescue Republican fortunes in Georgia.
With control of Congress hanging in the balance ahead of November 3, the increasingly bitter exchanges offered a glimpse of the political warfare gripping the country.
The bitter feud then escalated dramatically in the early hours of Sunday morning when Trump unleashed a furious Truth Social tirade, branding Obama a ‘grossly incompetent President’ and attacking the Democratic candidate he was campaigning for in Michigan.
In the extraordinary post, published shortly before 1am, Trump accused his predecessor of repeatedly backing losing candidates, citing Hillary Clinton’s defeat in 2016 and Kamala Harris’s loss in 2024.
‘Obama was a grossly incompetent President!’ Trump declared.
‘He said that Crooked Hillary Clinton was going to WIN, he campaigned hard for her, and she lost in all directions and ways. He then campaigned full out for Kamala, and likewise, she lost.’
The president then turned his fire on Michigan Democratic Senate hopeful Abdul El-Sayed, making a series of inflammatory and unsubstantiated accusations about his religion, political beliefs and professional background.
‘Now he’s campaigning for a Muslim Brotherhood Jihadist, who hates Jews and Blacks and AMERICANS and TRUMP, and he is going to lose, also,’ Trump wrote.
The president ended his tirade with an emphatic endorsement of El-Sayed’s Republican opponent, Mike Rogers.
