Why today is a bittersweet day for the Queen as she marks new milestone

HRH, The Queen marks a double anniversary today.

The Monarch has been in Sandringham since after the Christians break as it’s expected and today she marks the anniversary of the death of her father King George VI and also her 68th reigning year as Monarch.

Her Father, King George VI died in February 1952, at Sandringham House after battling a series of health issues. At that time, the Queen and her husband Prince Philip were on tour in Kenya so the pair travelled back to London. The royal couple were greeted by then-Prime Minister Winston Churchill as they disembarked from the plane, both wearing black as a mark of respect. Elizabeth and Philip had only been married for over four years, and the Queen was just 25 when she ascended the throne.

The King was buried at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle on 15 February 1952. The Queen’s coronation took place the following year on 2 June 1953. Her Majesty surpassed the reign of her great-great grandmother Queen Victoria in 2015 to become the longest-reigning British monarch. She was also the first to celebrate a Sapphire Jubilee in 2017, commemorating her 65 years on the throne.

Weeks ago, Royal fans celebrated the Queen’s unique achievement this year.

Adrian Hilton, a lecturer in Political Philosophy and Education and a Shakespeare world record holder, took to Twitter to share the good news. In his tweet, he said; “Just to say, today the Queen moved up a notch in the table of the world’s longest reigns, surpassing that of Franz Joseph I. God Save the Queen”.

The post which got tons of likes and retweets was a screenshot from Wikipedia, showing a table depicting the longest-reigning monarchs of all time. Queen Elizabeth II was listed at number five, alongside her birth date, 21 April 1926, and the date her reign began, 6 February 1952 (her coronation took place the following year).
