A dismembered human body without a head or arms was discovered along a New York City beach this week.
The New York Police Department responded to a call at 12:21 p.m. on Friday about a torso being found at Breezy Point Beach — located in the borough of Queens.
The ‘unidentified’ torso was discovered with ‘attached legs’ on the sand, according to a statement from the NYPD.
It did not appear that a head or arms were attached to the discovered torso.
Additional information was not immediately available on Saturday. An investigation is ongoing, according to the NYPD.
Cause of death
‘The Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death,’ the department added in a statement.
‘The identity of the deceased is pending proper family notification.’
The torso discovery comes a week after a man in Los Angeles was arrested when a dismembered torso was found in a dumpster.
How the body parts were found
Multiple outlets reported at the time that the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) said human body parts were found in a parking lot near Ventura Boulevard and Rubio Avenue.
‘When the officers responded they discovered a dismembered female wrapped in a plastic bag. It was just outside the dumpster, they confirmed that it was human remains,’ LAPD Detective Efren Gutierrez said at the time, per NBC Los Angeles.
‘If a murder suspect is dismembering a body, it’s to delay identification,’ Guttierez also told KTLA.
After reviewing surveillance footage, detectives began investigating suspect Samuel Haskell, per KABC-TV.
Gutierrez also reportedly told reporters that investigators found ‘blood evidence and other items’ in the home that the suspect shared with wife, Mei, and their three kids.
Haskell was later taken into custody on suspicion of murder, the outlet reported.
Mei and her parents, Gaoshan Li and Yanxiang Wang, have been missing since Nov. 6.
Haskell has since been charged with three counts of murder in connection with the deaths of his wife and in-laws, according to the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office. He is being held without bond.
