Anti-tourist protesters begin indefinite HUNGER STRIKE in Spain

To curb against mass tourism on island life, some activists have declared an indefinite hunger strike in Tenerife yesterday.

Tenerife Protest Today

Nearly a dozen anti-tourist protesters for a more sustainable type of tourism have gone ahead with their threat outside a church in the historic city of La Laguna, there is a great chance that more people will join the hunger strike.

Why Are They Protesting?

The campaigners want the authorities to halt two tourist projects – one involving the construction of a five-star hotel by one of Tenerife’s last virgin beaches called La Tejita.

They also want local and regional politicians to change the tourist model to protect the island from the worst excesses of mass tourism.

They believe pushing-up of property prices only happened because of sea pollution, traffic gridlock that are linked to Airbnb-style holiday lets.

About the Protest

The protest was organised by a platform called Canarias Se Agota, which in English translates literally as ‘The Canary Islands Are Exhausted’ and is linked to several associations including ecologist groups.

As it is, the names of those taking part in the hunger strike have so far been kept secret and they are not expected to give interviews while the extreme protest continues in a square called Plaza de la Concepcion outside a church of the same name.

This campaign against mass tourism is believed to be the first of its kind in Spain.

Now, the appearance of anti-tourist graffiti are all over in parts of Tenerife.

The campaigners have however denied claims that the graffiti is their doing and have accused politicians of ‘dirty tricks’ by accusing them of tourism-phobia.
