The Sixth Victim Of The Bondi Junction Stabbing Has Been Confirmed As Yixuan Cheng

Yixuan Cheng has been identified as the sixth victim of the fatal stabbing incident that occurred in Bondi Junction on Saturday, which police are now investigating as a possible targeted attack, possibly against women.

The victim, a Chinese national in her 20s and a student at the University of Sydney, was among the six individuals fatally stabbed by Joel Cauchi, a man from Queensland, at the shopping center on Saturday afternoon.

New South Wales Premier Chris Minns announced on Monday that $18 million would be allocated to the state coroner for an independent inquiry into the police response, investigation, and interactions the perpetrator had with government agencies.

Minns emphasized the innocence of the victims, stating, “The people who have been killed were innocent people who had their entire lives ahead of them,” expressing the community’s profound sorrow at their loss.

The state government plans to examine restrictions on security personnel in crowded areas but has ruled out any policy changes to permit them to carry firearms or stun guns.

University of Sydney Vice-Chancellor Prof. Mark Scott stated that the university is collaborating with the Chinese consulate and the victim’s family.

In an email sent to staff and students on Monday, Scott expressed shock and sadness over the “senseless violence and loss of life” that transpired on Saturday afternoon.

“On behalf of the university, I extend my sincere condolences to the student’s family and friends,” he said, adding: “Please take time today to check in on each other, this is a deeply distressing time for our community and I encourage you to look after each other and access the support available.”

Wang Chunsheng, China’s acting consul general in Sydney, said he was “very sorry to hear about” Cheng’s death.

The consulate would be in contact with her relatives in China to make arrangements, Wang said.
