The police have apprehended 33-year-old Chinazum Nwaubani in connection with a brutal attack on a 14-year-old girl in Obete Nchina Village, Ntighauzo community, Obingwa Local Government Area, Abia State.
The incident occurred following an attempted r*pe that was thwarted by the victim.
According to reports from Punch, Felicia Anaba and her twin brother had gone to gather firewood in a bush when Chinazum allegedly ambushed them with a machete.
He reportedly attempted to assault Felicia sexually, but she resisted fiercely while her brother managed to escape. Enraged by the resistance, Chinazum allegedly attacked Felicia, inflicting deep cuts on her head, leg, and hand before fleeing the scene, leaving her severely wounded and unconscious.
Felicia’s father, Mr. Chijioke Anaba, recounted that his family was alerted to the attack by her twin brother, who escaped uninjured. When they found Felicia, she was in a pool of blood and had lost consciousness due to blood loss from the machete wounds. She was subsequently rescued by a search party and taken to the hospital.
Mr. Anaba claimed that the police at the Eastern Ngwa Division initially demanded N30,000 before proceeding with investigation, a charge he denied paying. He expressed concern that the suspect, who hails from the same village, might be released from custody and pose further danger to his family. The police reportedly informed him that Chinazum is mentally unstable, a claim Mr. Anaba disputes.
He appealed to the wife of the state governor, Priscilla Otti, for assistance, especially considering the severity of his daughter’s injuries, which may result in permanent disability.
The spokesperson for the Abia State Police Command, DSP Maureen Chinaka, confirmed the incident but dismissed the allegations of a monetary demand. She stated that no credible evidence has been presented to support such claims and urged anyone with relevant evidence to report to the Complaint Response Unit for proper investigation.
Chinaka clarified that Chinazum Nwaubani was arrested following the attack on Felicia and her twin brother, who had gone to their father’s farm.
She explained that the suspect approached them armed with a machete, attacked Felicia when she refused to submit to his assault, and inflicted injuries on her head, back, and legs. The male twin managed to escape and alert the family, leading to the suspect’s swift arrest. The injured girl was hospitalized, and investigations are ongoing.
