RIYADH, SAUDI ARABIA – Former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua will face Mix Martial Art (MMA) star Francis Ngannou in a boxing match this year.
Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn confirmed this on his X account.
Francis Ngannou first upset the world …
Ngannou shocked the world on his professional boxing debut when he floored World Boxing Council (WBC) heavyweight champion Tyson Fury last October.
However, Fury recovered from the knock down to win on points via split decision.
… then he lost to Oleksandr Usyk
But Ngannou is back to take on another British heavyweight, Anthony Joshua, who is rebuilding his career after successive defeats to Oleksandr Usyk.
On Friday night it was revealed that both Joshua and Ngannou had signed a deal for the ten-round bout which will take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
The fight was confirmed by Hearn, who wrote: ‘Tonight we confirm it’s a done deal! @anthonyjoshua v @francis_ngannou collide on a huge night in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – press conference Jan 15 in London with full details dropping soon!’
Now, Anthony Joshua is next
Meanwhile, English manager and promoter Frank Warren confirmed the fight also.
‘Another historic night for @RiyadhSeason! Press conference and fight date news coming soon. Can’t wait for it all to get started!’
Date for the fight
It’s not been confirmed when the fight will happen, however, it’s reported that March 9, when Joshua was supposed to take on Deontay Wilder, is the date being touted.
Anthony Joshua goes into this spectacle on the back of three victories in 2023, his last one coming in December with an impressive win over Otto Wallin.
