Queen Margrethe of Denmark has been admitted to hospital, the Danish royal palace confirmed on Thursday, following the cancellation of a scheduled public appearance in Hellerup.

In an official statement, the palace explained: “As a result of the cold HM Queen Margrethe has contracted, it has been decided that the Queen will be admitted to Rigshospitalet for observation as a precaution.”

The 85-year-old former monarch had been due to attend an event marking the 125th anniversary of the Sankt Lukas Foundation, which provides health and welfare services across Denmark.

Queen Margrethe, who officially abdicated the throne in January 2024 in favour of her son, King Frederik X, was last seen in public on Sunday at a memorial service commemorating the 80th anniversary of Denmark’s liberation at Ryvangen Memorial Park in Copenhagen.

Ongoing Health Concerns

This latest hospitalisation comes amid a series of health challenges for the Queen. In February 2023, she underwent major back surgery and remained on sick leave until her birthday in April. Since then, she has often been seen using a walking stick.

In September 2024, she was hospitalised once again following a fall at Fredensborg Castle.

Queen Margrethe remains a deeply respected figure in Denmark and beyond, even after stepping down from the throne after more than five decades of service.
