Canadian rapper Drake has joined calls for the release of fellow artist Tory Lanez, publicly backing a petition that urges California Governor Gavin Newsom to issue a pardon.
Taking to Instagram, Drake shared a link to the Change.org petition titled “Correct a Deep Injustice,” adding the caption: “@torylanez come home soon.”
The petition has already amassed over 250,000 signatures and claims Lanez’s 2023 conviction was marred by insufficient physical evidence and politically influenced sentencing enhancements.
Tory Lanez, born Daystar Peterson, is currently serving a 10-year sentence following his conviction for the 2020 shooting of rapper Megan Thee Stallion. A California jury found him guilty of discharging a firearm that injured Megan in the foot after an argument broke out in a vehicle following a party in the Hollywood Hills.
The campaign for Lanez’s pardon has regained momentum in light of recent reports that the rapper was stabbed 14 times by another inmate. He was reportedly treated at a medical facility in Bakersfield before being returned to the prison hospital.
While the case falls under California’s state jurisdiction—giving Governor Newsom the power to grant a pardon—his office has not yet commented on the matter. Drake’s endorsement adds significant celebrity attention to the petition, though it’s unclear whether it will have any bearing on the governor’s decision.
