Police officers from the Atani Divisional Police Headquarters, while on patrol on May 7, discovered a burnt body in a waste dump at Iyiowa Odekpe.
The authorities suspect the victim may have fallen prey to jungle justice. Preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased, along with other gang members, was involved in stealing car batteries.
It is believed that the victim was caught by an angry mob during a criminal operation and set on fire, while the other gang members managed to escape.
In a statement, the state police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident and emphasized that the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, condemned the mob’s actions.
The Commissioner urged the public to refrain from taking the law into their own hands and to allow law enforcement agencies to handle criminal investigations appropriately. He also called on the people of Anambra and residents to remain calm and exercise patience in such situations.
