Violent unrest erupted in Rano Local Government Area of Kano State on Monday, May 26, following the alleged death of a young man, Abdullahi Musa, while in police custody.
According to local residents, Musa was arrested for a traffic-related offense and reportedly died during police interrogation. Eyewitnesses accused the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Rano, identified as Baba Ali, of severely beating the victim, which allegedly led to his death.
“A young man was beaten mercilessly by the DPO. Later, we heard he died in their custody. That’s what triggered the protest,” a resident named Muhammad told reporters.
The incident sparked outrage among local youths, who took to the streets in protest, demanding justice for Musa. The situation escalated when police allegedly fired live rounds in an attempt to disperse the demonstrators, injuring at least two—Hassan Salisu Hassan and Muhammad Ibrahim—both of whom are receiving treatment at Rano General Hospital.
In retaliation, enraged protesters hurled stones at the officers and eventually set the Rano Divisional Police Headquarters ablaze.
Reports indicate that DPO Baba Ali also sustained serious injuries during the clash and is currently receiving medical attention.
The Kano State Police Command has confirmed the incident. In a statement released via his official Facebook page, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, promised a full investigation: “Incident in Rano — a thorough investigation will be conducted, by the Grace of God,” he wrote.
Authorities have yet to announce any arrests or disciplinary actions as the investigation continues.
