A secondary school student en route to sit for his West African Examination Council (WAEC) paper was fatally shot by a stray bullet allegedly fired by police officers in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Monday, May 20.
According to eyewitnesses, the tragic incident occurred near Gbagi Market Road when police officers opened fire on a vehicle they were pursuing, reportedly suspecting the occupants of involvement in internet fraud, commonly referred to as “Yahoo boys.”
One of the bullets allegedly struck the student, who was riding on the back of his father’s motorcycle.
The injured student was rushed to Welfare Hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
In response, outraged residents and sympathizers took the victim’s body to the Oyo State Government Secretariat in protest, seeking the attention of Governor Seyi Makinde.
As of the time of this report, the Oyo State Police Command has not issued an official statement regarding the incident.
