U.S. President Donald Trump has called for a 30-day unconditional ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, warning that additional sanctions would be imposed if the truce is not upheld.
Ukraine has expressed willingness to accept a U.S.-backed 30-day ceasefire, while Russia has only proposed a short three-day pause, marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II this Thursday.
Trump issued a statement on social media saying: “If the 30-day ceasefire is not respected, the U.S. and its allies will impose additional sanctions.”
He added, “Hopefully, an acceptable ceasefire will be observed, and both nations will be held accountable for respecting the sanctity of these direct negotiations.”
“This ceasefire should ultimately pave the way for a Peace Agreement. It can be achieved quickly, and I am available at any time if my assistance is needed.”
While Trump has expressed a desire to end the war in Ukraine, his administration has also threatened to step back from its mediation efforts if no meaningful progress is made.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed in a call with Trump on Thursday that Kyiv is prepared for an immediate 30-day ceasefire, emphasizing that Russia must first show genuine intent to end the war by committing to an unconditional ceasefire.
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister criticized Russia’s three-day ceasefire proposal, calling it a “farce,” while Russia countered by accusing Ukraine of continuing to engage in hostilities.
Trump initiated talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in February, aiming to fulfill a campaign promise to end the conflict within 24 hours of starting a second term. However, frustration has mounted over the lack of progress as the war continues.
Top U.S. officials have hinted that Washington may reconsider its role as a mediator if tangible results are not achieved soon.
