The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has officially addressed the recent arrest of social commentator Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), clarifying the circumstances surrounding his detention.
In a statement released on Tuesday morning, the EFCC said Otse was arrested following multiple petitions alleging serious financial misconduct. The agency emphasized that the accusations were significant and could not be ignored.
According to the EFCC, Otse repeatedly failed to respond to formal invitations for questioning, prompting the agency to take further action. The statement read:
“Martins Innocent Otse was invited by the EFCC over a series of petitions involving allegations of financial crimes. Despite several invitations delivered through known addresses and communication channels, he failed to appear. The nature of the allegations—pertaining to financial malfeasance—is serious and warrants investigation.”
The EFCC dismissed widespread speculation that Otse’s arrest was connected to his outspoken criticism of the agency, stating that while his remarks were “unguarded and condemnable,” they had no bearing on the decision to detain him.
The commission also clarified that Otse’s detention was carried out in accordance with the law, including securing a valid remand order. He has since been granted administrative bail and will be released upon meeting the required conditions.
“The EFCC, like any law enforcement agency, has the right to detain a suspect under investigation with the proper legal authorization,” the statement added. “Mr. Otse has been offered administrative bail and will be released once all conditions are met.”
The agency concluded by urging the public to allow it to carry out its duties without undue speculation or interference: “We appreciate the interest Nigerians show in our work. However, assumptions about our motives must cease. The EFCC remains committed to performing its mandate without fear or favour. Charges will be filed as soon as investigations are concluded.”
