Prince William has confirmed he will travel to Rio de Janeiro later this year for the fifth annual Earthshot Prize Awards—an adventure he says he’s personally thrilled about.

Speaking during a panel discussion at the Leading with Impact event, part of London Climate Action Week, the Prince of Wales shared his anticipation for visiting South America, a region he’s long hoped to explore.

“From a personal point of view, I’ve always wanted to get to South America—especially Brazil,” the 43-year-old royal said. “I’m genuinely excited about going there. The region is rich in biodiversity and environmental passion, and I think it perfectly represents the energy and sustainable innovation we need more of globally. The vibrancy and enthusiasm there will make this year’s awards truly spectacular.”

The 2025 Earthshot Prize ceremony is scheduled for 5 November at the Museum of Tomorrow in Rio de Janeiro—marking the first time the prestigious event will be hosted in Latin America. The ceremony also comes just days ahead of COP30, which Brazil will host in Belém, underscoring the country’s growing role in the global climate conversation.

Jason Knauf, CEO of The Earthshot Prize, echoed the Prince’s excitement: “The Museum of Tomorrow is the perfect venue to reflect the Earthshot mission of urgency and optimism. This year’s ceremony will celebrate Brazil’s leadership in climate and conservation while supercharging the work of our 2025 finalists. It’s shaping up to be the most powerful Earthshot event yet.”

Launched by Prince William in 2020, the Earthshot Prize awards £1 million to each of five winners annually, recognising innovative solutions that help repair and protect the planet.
