When Prince William inherited the Duchy of Cornwall in 2022, he didn’t just accept the title — he brought a bold new vision that left senior aides scrambling.
At 42, William became the 25th Duke of Cornwall, taking over a vast £1 billion estate spanning 128,000 acres across 20 counties.
The Duchy, traditionally known for its wealth, farmland, and heritage, is a cornerstone of royal income. But for William, its future lies in people — not just profit.
A Surprising Question
During a visit to Corston Fields Farm near Bath, William spoke candidly with long-time tenant Gerald Addicott, whose family has farmed Duchy land since 1982. When Addicott jokingly suggested the Prince could make tenancies rent-free, William replied with a smile — but also sincerity.
“You’re not the first person to say that,” he said. “I questioned whether I could do just that when I took over, and got a lot of sweaty faces looking back at me.”
The quip sparked laughter, but it also hinted at the Prince’s serious commitment to shaking up tradition.
Shifting Priorities: From Revenue to Reform
William has made it clear he wants the Duchy to be more than a revenue-generating estate. He envisions it as a “positive force for good,” focused on making a meaningful social and environmental impact.
Shortly after taking over, he introduced a new guiding principle: “Positive impact for people, places, and planet.”

- Boosting rural mental health with community-based initiatives
- Environmental action, including reforestation and peatland restoration
William makes regular private visits to farms and communities within the Duchy to listen, learn, and understand what tenants truly need.
Modern Leadership, Royal Roots
The Prince’s leadership style is open, modern, and unusually hands-on. He communicates regularly with staff, encourages honest dialogue, and even stays connected via WhatsApp. According to Ben Murphy, one of the estate directors, William brings a “healthy impatience” to the role — eager to push for progress.
Will Bax, the Duchy’s chief executive, said, “He’s easy to follow because he really cares.”
William also recently appointed a Family Farming Ambassador — a role aimed at supporting tenant families beyond farming operations, recognising challenges like rural isolation and financial stress.
Community at the Core
The future king’s goal is to make the Duchy feel less like a distant institution and more like a connected community. The estate now hosts events such as “pie and pint” nights to help neighbours connect and combat loneliness in rural areas.
Much of William’s work happens quietly, behind the scenes. He’s made private visits to charities like We Are Farming Minds, which supports the mental health of farmers — a cause he’s passionate about.
Reimagining the Monarchy’s Role
Prince William’s approach to the Duchy reflects a broader shift in how he views his royal role. He’s not just maintaining tradition — he’s reimagining it.
“There’s so much good we can do in the rural world,” he said during one visit. “It’s not just about buildings and land.”
