Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s love story is the stuff of modern fairytales—starting with a secret trip to Africa in 2016 and culminating in a royal wedding two years later.
Now, in the second season of her Netflix series With Love, Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex shares a tender memory from the early days of their whirlwind romance—one that still makes her blush.
In episode three, Meghan is joined by fashion expert and Queer Eye star Tan France for a casual crafting session that quickly turns into a heart-to-heart. When the topic of love comes up, Tan asks, “Was there a moment where you went, ‘Oh, I love this guy’?”
Without missing a beat, Meghan smiles and replies, “Yes, that was our third date.”
Tan, surprised by her quick answer, digs deeper. Meghan then opens up about the magical beginnings of their relationship: “We met in Botswana and camped for five days together. You really get to know someone when you’re in a little tent together.”
Naturally, Tan asks the big question: “Did you tell him first, or did he tell you?”
Meghan grins and reveals that it was Harry who said “I love you” first—and as she recalls the moment, she can’t help but look shy. Tan immediately teases her, “You’re blushing!” Cue collective swooning.

Botswana: Where It All Began
Harry’s decision to take Meghan to Botswana wasn’t just a romantic gesture—it was deeply personal. The Duke of Sussex has long shared his profound connection to Africa, and Botswana in particular.
“I came here in 1997 or 1998, straight after my mum died,” Harry once revealed. “It was a nice place to get away from it all. It gave me a sense of escapism and a real sense of purpose. I’ve made some of my closest friends here over the years.”
During their trip, Harry and Meghan camped under the stars and explored the breathtaking landscape on safari—experiences that laid the foundation for their strong bond. The country would later play a symbolic role in their engagement as well: Harry sourced one of the stones for Meghan’s ring from Botswana, making it a permanent part of their love story.
At one point, the couple even considered relocating to the continent. In the documentary Harry & Meghan: An African Journey, Harry mused: “I don’t know where we could live in Africa at the moment… We’ve just come from Cape Town. That would be an amazing place for us to be able to base ourselves.”
