The Duke of Sussex’s memoir, Spare, made headlines with its explosive content when it was first released in January 2023. This autumn, the book will be available in a new paperback edition. Penguin Random House has announced that the paperback version will be published in the US on October 22 and in the UK on October 24.
While paperback editions often feature additional chapters or updates, the publisher confirmed that this new edition will have the same cover as the hardcover, with a redesigned package but no changes to the book’s content.
Spare included dramatic revelations, such as Prince Harry’s claims that his brother, the Prince of Wales, physically attacked him, and that the King prioritized his own interests over Harry’s. The book also described Queen Camilla as “dangerous,” accusing her of using him to enhance her own image at his expense.
In a January 2023 interview with Bryony Gordon for The Telegraph, Harry commented on his 416-page memoir, saying, “It could have been two books, put it that way.”
He noted that while some context was shared with ghostwriter JR Moehringer, certain details were deliberately left out. Harry mentioned that telling his story inevitably involved family members, but there were aspects of his relationships with his brother and father that he chose not to reveal, out of concern they might never forgive him.
The memoir also covered Harry’s frustration as the “spare to the heir,” his anger toward the UK media, unresolved trauma from his mother’s death, mental health struggles, his solitary life before Meghan, and the collapse of family relationships.
The book became an international bestseller, selling over six million copies globally and earning the Guinness World Record for the fastest-selling nonfiction book of all time.
The release of the paperback version may align with King Charles and Queen Camilla’s upcoming royal tour of Australia and Samoa this autumn, which will include the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Samoa from October 21 to 26, with the King and Queen expected to attend.
