A Kano High Court on Monday, May 5, sentenced four men—Nafi’u Isah, Haruna Ya’u, Nadabo Mohammed, and Sa’adu Musa—to a combined total of 160 years in prison for armed robbery and attempted murder.

The men were convicted on four charges: criminal conspiracy, armed robbery, attempted murder, and causing grievous harm.

Delivering the judgment, Justice Usman Na’abba stated that the prosecution had proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt. As a result, each of the convicts received the following sentences:

  • Six months for conspiracy
  • 20 years for armed robbery
  • 10 years for attempted murder
  • Five years for causing grievous harm

The judge also ordered that the convicts pay the complainant, Haruna Shehu, N650,000, the amount they had stolen, or serve an additional five years in prison. The sentences will run concurrently.

According to the prosecution, led by Mr. Lamido Abba-Sorondinki, the incident occurred on May 1, 2022, in Kunkurawa Village, Dawakin Kudu Local Government Area, Kano. At around 1:00 am, the convicts conspired and armed themselves with guns, sticks, and cutlasses before breaking into the home of Haruna Shehu. The men assaulted Shehu and his family, causing significant injuries to his son, Ado Haruna Shehu, and stole N650,000 from the household.

The prosecution presented six witnesses and evidence to support the case, while the defendants denied the charges.

The Defense Counsel, Mr. Sani Idris, called on the convicts to testify in their defense, but their arguments were not enough to sway the court.

The crime contravened sections 97, 298(c), 230(a), and 349 of the Penal Code Laws of Kano State, 1991.
