A tragic double homicide took place in Sakhasonke Village, Walmer Location, Gqeberha, South Africa, on May 1, 2025, when 40-year-old Lusanda Coboza and her 19-year-old daughter, Anelisa Hailie-Jade Coboza, were shot and killed in their home.
The devastating news was shared by the advocacy group, Women for Change, in a statement on May 12, 2025.
Police responded to reports of gunfire in the Walmer area and found both victims with multiple gunshot wounds. Despite efforts to save them, both mother and daughter were pronounced dead at the scene.
The suspects fled the scene but were apprehended soon after. Four men, aged between 28 and 46, have been arrested in connection with the murders. Authorities are investigating charges of conspiracy to commit murder, murder, and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
Hailie-Jade, a Grade 12 student at Collegiate Girls’ High School in Gqeberha, was remembered for her bright future. Her funeral took place on May 10 in Soweto.
In response to the senseless violence, Women for Change expressed their heartbreak, stating, “We are heartbroken by the loss of such beautiful souls. Another mother and daughter have been murdered. How many more must die before Gender-Based Violence and Femicide are declared a National Disaster?”
