The Princess of Wales is often admired for her poise at public events, but every now and then, she shows off a wonderful sense of humour.
One memorable moment came during a 2020 visit when Kate was playfully mistaken for Prince William’s assistant—and she delivered a brilliant, witty response.
The royal couple were meeting residents at Cardiff’s Shire Hall Care Home, including the outspoken Joan Drew-Smith, who had previously made headlines for her refreshingly blunt critique of their royal bingo skills.
Reintroducing himself, Prince William said, “Hello Joan, do you remember we did bingo with you? You said we weren’t very good!”
Joan didn’t hold back: “Yes, you did a bloody s****y job.”
Since both William and Kate were wearing face masks due to the pandemic, it was sometimes tricky to communicate.
William explained to Joan, “We have to wear masks because of the virus, but it’s difficult to hear sometimes when you can’t see someone’s mouth.”
That’s when Joan, pointing at Kate, asked with a grin, “Is that your assistant?”

Kate laughed and, placing a hand on her husband’s shoulder, replied, “Well, I am your assistant! I have been for a long time!”
Later, William fondly told staff, “I love Joan, she’s brilliant. If only everyone was as honest as her.”
Just this week, the royal couple once again charmed the public during their visit to Scotland for the HMS Glasgow’s official naming ceremony.
While Princess Kate took centre stage as the ship’s sponsor, a light-hearted moment with a fan quickly went viral.
As they greeted the crowd on Thursday, a fan called out to Kate, “You’re beautiful!” before adding with a smile, “You too, William!”
Both Kate and William laughed, and William replied with a grin, “You don’t have to say that. Don’t worry.”
He then affectionately placed a hand on Kate’s arm as they continued their walk, showcasing their warm and playful bond.
