King Charles and Queen Camilla’s relationship has always been full of endearing moments, and the couple’s playful affection for each other was on display once again during a recent public outing.
While it’s well-known that Charles has affectionately called Camilla “Gladys” and she has referred to him as “Fred” — names inspired by characters from the BBC radio show “The Goon Show” — a new pet name slipped out in public this week.
The royal pair were planting a tree alongside Sweden’s King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia when Charles used the term “DARLING” while giving Camilla instructions on where to place the soil. With a smile, he said, “On this side, darling, this side,” making the sweet moment even more charming.
The Meaning of Pet Names
Pet names are more than just casual nicknames; they hold a deeper significance in relationships.
A new survey by Coca-Cola Trademark found that pet names symbolize shared history, inside jokes, and personal connections, strengthening the bond between partners. Charlotte Butt, Senior Marketing Manager for Coca-Cola Trademark, noted, “Nicknames are a shorthand for shared experiences and the unique relationship between individuals.”
While “darling” may be considered old-fashioned, along with terms like “sweetie” and “duck,” the survey revealed that 42% of people feel happy and loved when called by their nickname, with one in ten feeling more secure due to the affectionate term.
Camilla’s Other Endearing Nicknames
Camilla has earned a few other playful nicknames over the years. Her grandchildren affectionately call her “Gaga,” adding a touch of glamour to the name. Among friends and family, she’s also been playfully referred to as “Lorraine,” a clever twist on the French word for “Queen,” La Reine.
Royal biographer Robert Hardman shared in Charles III that a friend of Camilla’s remarked, “She always saw the funny side of that – even if Prince Charles did not.”
