Tragedy struck the Asa Umudim community in Osisioma Ngwa Local Government Area of Abia State on Saturday, May 17, 2025, when a man allegedly set his wife and three children ablaze over suspicions of infidelity.
According to local reports, the man accused his wife of engaging in extramarital affairs, citing the frequent ringing of her phone and her interactions with male callers as evidence. In a fit of rage, he is said to have poured a flammable substance on his wife and children before setting their home on fire.
The blaze claimed the life of one of their daughters, while the wife and two other children sustained severe burns and are currently receiving treatment in a hospital. The names of the victims have not yet been made public.
The horrifying incident sent shockwaves through the community, with neighbors expressing anger and heartbreak. Eyewitnesses said that enraged residents attempted to lynch the man before the police arrived and took him into custody.
Confirming the incident, Abia State Police spokesperson, DSP Maureen Chinaka, stated that the suspect has been arrested and that investigations are ongoing.
The remains of the deceased daughter have been deposited at a local mortuary, while authorities continue to probe the motive and circumstances surrounding the attack.
